My Pedagogical Approach
Grounded in Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed and in August Boal’s Theater of the Oppressed didactic approaches, I use critical-thinking theories to promote self-awareness, critical consciousness, and critical thinking among myriad audiences, including students, professors, visual art viewers, and theatergoers. I consider the streets, the market, the town square, the classroom, the gallery walls, and the theater stage as environments for developing critical consciousness (conscientização). Critical Consciousness is our innate capacity and curiosity to learn about the political and socioeconomic issues that influence our development as human beings.
Below I share information on courses I have taught in the last few years. I also share some independent study and doctoral projects on which I have acted as advisor or mentor, helping students integrate art into social justice practice and self-healing, and/or mentoring around art-based and artistic research.
