My Gender States

Exhibit at Lane Hall

Institute for Research on Women and Gender, University of Michigan

My Gender States comprises photographs of assemblage sculptures from my site-specific installation performance, Realm of the Dead. I performed/exhibited Realm to celebrate the University of Michigan School of Social Work’s Centennial (2021), and as the featured artist at the a2ru annual conference in Ann Arbor in 2022. Marília originated at the 2015 United Solo Festival on Theatre Row in New York City, where it won the award for Best Documentary Script.

My Gender States is a selection of materials, images, and texts from Marília and Realm, curated to reflect in particular the themes of gender and sexuality in these works.

The images below follow my life course, portraying my gender states, gender confusion, gender embodiments, gender doubt, and reactions to gender stigma. Textual excerpts from the scripts of Marília and Realm of the Dead accompany each photograph. In 1966, when I was 10 months old, my three-year-old sister Marília was killed by a bus outside the housing project where we lived. As a little boy, I came to believe that I was a replacement for my “little” dead sister. After all, like three of my sisters, I was molested by my father. He was a man, so I had to be a girl. I began to embody what I imagined were Marília’s mannerisms, voice, and psychology– the first of myriad gender states of my life.

The style and format of My Gender States was inspired by Kate Bornstein’s My Gender Workbook, in which the author gives guidance on understanding one’s gender as a unique collage that develops over time.
